Foot Surgery Message Board Index . . . . All Heel Pain Message Boards2 surgeries and still hurting

Hi,
I was diagnosed with Bi-Lateral Planter fascia in 97. My left foot some what healed its self (but still have pain if I over due it). I had 2 surgeries on my right foot. The first surgery my podiatrist performed the release, which didn’t help the problem. She then when in a year later, released it as well as removed a piece. The incision looks great on the out side and is about 2 inches long. When you touch the incision, it shoots pain across to the other side of my foot. I still can not walk for more than an hour at a time. The bottom of my foot still has no feeling and I have no control over my 4th and 5th Toes. Is there any hope?

Suzy, sounds like some nerves were disturbed. My doctor did a partial release on my left using the orthoscopic technique. I have NO scars. He also did something to the tops of my middle three toes to prevent them from rideing or sticking up too far as a result of the plantar facaciitttsss being cut. I'm sorry I have forgotten the exact name to this procedure but it seems he made a single incision about a millimeter on the top of the foot just behind the toes and released some of the ligiment or whatever, anyway, my toes don't hurt or appear abnormal. Its been 5 weeks now and my foot is virtually out of pain. I did buy the german Ibuprofen Cream on this site and so far so gooooooood. Hope this helps. Is it too late to have your procedure over using this orthoscopic method?

Darrel,
Hi, thank you for getting back with me. I think that it is to late for the procedure. My toes are not curling or sticking up they just do not work :) I will look at the cream you are talking about and see how that works. Did your foot sweel alot before the surgery? what were your symptoms?

The lack of movement in your toes is probaby due to nerve involvement. This is tough to deal with. Time may be the anwer to your problem. I am sorry how long has this been going on.?
I am very glad that Darrel is getting a very good result. The cutting of the extensor tendons stops the dorsiflexion of the metatarsal-phalangeal joint which reduced the pulling of the plantar fascia.
I haven't heard of this being done for a long time. My father use to do this before the plantar fascia release . There are some old time podiatrists that were of the opinion that this was a very good procedure and would do this before any pf releases.
Whether it is necessary to do in conjunction with the pf release can only be determine by the individual doctor who does the treatment. There are no studies that I am aware of that prove that cutting of the extensor tendons with cuttting of the plantar fascia is a better procedure.
But Darrel is an example of a very good result. But was it the cutting of the fascia or the cutting of the extensor tendons or was it both.???

I too had the surgery twice on one foot. First by podiatrist, then two years later by orthopedic foot surgeon. I have nerve imbeded in scar tissue and have the same shock across bottom of foot when nerve next to heel is touched. It's been 8 years now and I can only walk about 2 hours. I've been taking Neurontin since September and I can now walk about 4 hours but the best part is I don't pay for it for 2 days afterward like I used to. I am going to a neurologist for this and am taking 2400 mg now. It makes you sleepy at first and you have to work up the dosage. The sleepiness gets better with time but I do sleep good at night and my feet don't ache at night like they used to. Good Luck

Thank you for your reply, It has been 2 years since I had the fascia cut. The first surgery was the release and than again to remove a piece of the fascia a year later. the heel of my foot is numb and has gained no feeling back since the first surgery.
Have a great New Year!!

You won't get back the feeling after all this time. Time has done all it can. You can of had the flexor digortium brevis tendon cut with the pf and that may be the reason for the lack of toe movement,

Suzy,
I want you to know I understand your frustration. I have had plantar faciiotomies on both my feet (1 ea).
LEFT: 9/6/00 partial release with spur removal .. 2" long incision that still hurts and is numb. I still have foot pain with orthodics and have had many shots since then. However, the difference pre and post op is that the foot pain goes away (temporarily) after a long days work. That is, if my foot is throbbing at the end of a work day, it will be ok by the next morning. Pre-op .. my foot was sore all the time.
RIGHT: 12/22/00 partial release with spur removal .. same incision .. a little numb, but not so bad. I sprained my ankle right after surgery so I am hating life! I have an aircast on now. Believe it or not, my ankle was so sore, I couldn't feel any pain from the surgery .. I am tender in the heel, but my primary pain is in the ankle.
I don't think I've offered any help, but I wanted you to know that this has ruined my life for the past few years. I have a job that requires travel and many hours on my feet .. I've been miserable.
Take care. Please let me know how you are.
